Our Gardens

photo0jpg.jpg

The grounds at Cormiston Farm span two tranquil acres of lawns, vibrant flower-beds, and a traditional orchard. Bordered by open fields where our Hebridean sheep, ponies, and horses graze, the estate wanderings lead you through a historic walled garden, peaceful woods, and rustic outbuildings, all harmonizing with the sweeping landscape of the Clyde Valley.

The Walled Kitchen Garden

The heart of our grounds is the original Georgian kitchen garden, protected by tall six-foot stone walls that capture and radiate the sun’s warmth. Within these historic borders, we cultivate the very vegetables that grace our guests' dinner tables. It is a sanctuary of seasonal abundance, where rhubarb, raspberries, blackcurrants, and strawberries thrive amidst precisely clipped box hedging, and redcurrants ripen safely within their new fruit cage - a working testament to the heritage of Cormiston Farm.

Orchard & Seasonal Planting

Beyond the kitchen garden lies our herb garden and native hedging - hawthorn, dog rose, and blackthorn, providing a sanctuary for local birdlife. Our small orchard is a living link to the past, home to traditional apple varieties such as Bramley, Cox’s Orange Pippin, and Worcester Pearmain. As the seasons turn, the grounds rewrite themselves: from the first brave snowdrops and hellebores to the vibrant, dramatic blooms of rhododendrons, azaleas, and trilliums. We tend the landscape with a light touch, pruning the ancient rhododendrons to reveal hidden areas and ensuring that self-seeded daffodils and bluebells return to our woods year after year, creating a shifting tapestry of color and life.

Wild Waters & Winged Visitors

Our wildlife ponds are a sanctuary of quiet life, where sticklebacks dart through the reeds and frogs bask on mossy stones, though the peace is often punctuated by our pigs happily splashing in the shallows. Nearby, wild areas are left to flourish with nettles, long grass, and the bright blue of chicory, providing a haven for insects and small creatures. High above, the garden’s trees are alive with birdsong, while the silent flight of visiting owls and the tall, patient silhouette of a heron at the water’s edge mark the passing of the hours.
